The Chicago Cubs are heading towards the MLB trade deadline on July 31 as one of the hottest teams in baseball. At this point in the year, they look like a legitimate World Series contender in the National League.
Heading into Sunday’s action, the Cubs held a 59-39 record. They were the best team in baseball by record by just a half of a game over the Detroit Tigers.
With that being said, Jed Hoyer and the front office will have a chance to take some big swings ahead of the deadline. They have a lot of talented prospects available who could be moved for the right players. Chicago is widely expected to have an aggressive mindset.
While the Cubs have been connected to quite a few starting pitching options, they could also use another bullpen arm and perhaps a third baseman as well.
Chicago Cubs’ 2025 Trade Deadline Plans Given Big Update By MLB Insider
Many are wondering what to expect from Chicago ahead of the deadline. One MLB insider gave an update into what their plans likely are.
Bob Nightengale of USA Today believes that the Cubs are going to look to swing big. He doesn’t think they’re going to slow down trying to win a championship.
“The Chicago Cubs, who were aggressive during the winter prying All-Star outfielder Kyle Tucker and closer Ryan Pressly from the Astros, can’t stop now,” he wrote.

Quite a few names have been brought up as potential targets for Chicago. Among the most popular are Miami Marlins starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara, Pittsburgh Pirates starter Mitch Keller and third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes, and Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen.
There are quite a few other players who could also come up as possible options for the team.
Expect to see the Cubs stay aggressive leading up to the deadline. They’re already a championship caliber team, but adding another big piece or two could put them over the top and lead to a World Series run.
