The 2025 MLB traded deadline is coming up quickly. Quite a few teams around the league would love to be buyers, but there are not as many sellers as there have been in years past. One of the teams with an aggressive mindset right now is the Chicago Cubs.
All season long, the Cubs have been one of the best teams in baseball. They combine an elite lineup with quality starting pitching and a solid all-around bullpen.
While they are already a World Series contender, there are still a few needs to address.
One of those needs could be upgrading their third base situation. Chicago currently has Matt Shaw, but he has not been good at the plate this season. A trade to bring in an upgrade might be in the cards for Jed Hoyer and company.

With a potential need for a third baseman in mind, there is one option who the team is interested in.
According to a report from The Athletic, the Cubs are interested in trading for Arizona Diamondbacks’ third baseman Eugenio Suarez.
“Eugenio Suárez might not get traded, but if the Arizona Diamondbacks ultimately make that call, the Cubs should be involved until the last minute. Hoyer and Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen are good friends who previously worked together in Boston’s front office. It’s no secret that the Cubs are looking at Suárez as a potential upgrade at third base.”

Suarez would be a huge addition for Chicago. While he is not a great defensive third baseman, the bat that he brings to the diamond would be a massive upgrade.
During the 2025 MLB season thus far with the Diamondbacks, Suarez has played in 98 games. He has hit 35 home runs to go along with 85 RBI’s, while batting .257/.328/.601. Those numbers would be a welcome addition for the Cubs.
It will be interesting to see what they choose to do before the deadline. Hoyer has a lot of prospects to work with if he chooses to take a big swing at a player. Suarez would be well worth taking that swing on.
