Texas Rangers second ranked prospect and fourth overall pick in last year’s draft Wyatt Langford is scheduled to make history on Thursday, March 28 when he is apart of the Opening Day roster that will take on the Chicago Cub. The Florida Gator star has had an uncommonly fast path to the big leagues. Here is where he ranks among other players who had accelerated paths to their MLB debuts.
In regards to minor league games played Wyatt Langford will be the third fastest batter to the big leagues.
According to Jim Callis at MLB.com only two other batters have played in fewer minor league games before making their big league debuts. The first is also another Rangers player Pete Incaviglia in which he never played in a minor league game. After him there is John Olerud from the Toronto Blue Jays who appeared in ust six minor league games. For reference Langford played in 44 games last season.
Since the year 2000 only five other players have made their big league debuts in a quicker amount of days passed since joining the organization.
Per Joe Doyle when Wyatt Langford debuts with the Rangers on Thursday 263 days will have passed since he joined their organization. Only five other players have debuted quicker. Nolan Schanuel was the fastest last year having debuted in just 40 days, Ryan Zimmerman second at 86 days, Conor Gillaspie third at 96 days, Rickie Weeks fourth at 104 days, and Xavier Nandy fifth at 114 days.
What position will Wyatt Langford play with the Texas Rangers?
While naturally an outfielder the current plan is for Langford to serve as the primary designated hitter. He also will backup all three outfield positions. So far he has not given Texas any reason to doubt him, so long as he continues to produce at the plate the Rangers will keep giving him playing time.
