The Baltimore Orioles are off to a dominating start of the 2024 season. They have easily handled the Los Angeles Angels through the first two games in which they won by scores of 11-3 and 13-4. Here we take a look at some of the numbers behind their performance.
Baltimore Orioles Pitching: one MLB record set, one franchise record set.
On Opening Day the Orioles new ace Corbin Burnes made MLB history by throwing six innings, walking zero batters, and striking out eleven. A day later Grayson Rodriguez matched him innings wise and struck out a career best nine batters. Together they became the first pair in Baltimore history to open the team’s season with consecutive starts of six-plus innings, one or fewer runs allowed and eight-plus strikeouts (Courtesy of MLB.com reporter Jake Rill).
Two Baltimore Orioles franchise records set by the offense.
As mentioned during the introduction the Orioles put up run totals of 11 and 13 during their first two contests. Jake Rill also reported that prior to this they had never had back-to-back games to begin the season where they scored 11 runs. Branching off of this their run differential during these two games has been +17. This is the best run differential by the franchise through their first two games.
The Baltimore Orioles could continue to dominate throughout the first month of the season.
Two games is not a large sample size, but looking ahead through the month of April the Orioles may continue to dominate. In April the only teams that made the playoffs last year that they will play are the Milwaukee Brewers and Minnesota Twins. They otherwise play the Pittsburgh Pirates. Boston Red Sox, Oakland Athletics, New York Yankees, the Kansas City Royals twice, and the Los Angeles Angels again one more time.
