The Chicago Cubs lost on Opening Day to the Texas Rangers in extra innings with the final core being 4-3. This contest was close throughout, but unfortunately the Cubs also saw starting pitcher Justin Steele leave the game early after a leg injury. He now will undergo an MRI and is heading to the injured list.
Justin Steele suffered a hamstring injury in the fifth inning.
Steele’s injury occurred after he chased down a ball in front of him. With his momentum carrying him towards the first base line he underhand threw the ball to first base, but came up grabbing the back part of his leg. Team officials confirmed that he was dealing with a hamstring injury.
The Chicago Cubs will have Justin Steele undergo a MRI to determine the severity.
Shadev Sharma of The Athletic reported that Steele will be heading to the injured list, but no timetable for return has officially been set. The plan is for him to undergo an MRI on Friday, March 29. A better idea as to the severity of the strain will then allow for a more accurate timeline.
Which Chicago Cubs player will replace Justin Steele in the starting rotation?
Following the game manager Craig Counsell would not reveal who will take Steele’s spot in the starting rotation. However the Cubs have players like Drew Smylyl and Hayden Wesneski and they seem like two possible candidates.
