The 2025 MLB season has been moving quickly and the trade deadline is right around the corner. With that in mind, the New York Mets are a team worth keeping a close eye on.
At this point, the Mets hold a 53-39 record. They have looked at times like a legitimate World Series contender, but in other moments they have struggled in a big way.
There are quite a few areas that New York could look to improve. One of those areas is the starting rotation. Adding an elite starting pitcher should be at the very top of the Mets’ priority list.
Now, a name has been suggested as a possible option for the team.
New York Mets Could Make 1 Huge Move to Improve Rotation
Jim Bowden, an MLB insider for The Athletic, has suggested New York as a possible trade destination for Miami Marlins starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara.
Alcantara is a player who many believe will be traded. He has been mentioned in trade rumors since the offseason, but the Marlins have held off on dealing him to this point.
So far this season, Alcantara has struggled. He has made 18 starts, compiling a 4-9 record to go along with a 7.22 ERA, a 1.48 WHIP, a 1.9 K/BB ratio, and 91 innings of work completed.
On the outside looking in, that does not look great. However, looking back at the 2022 MLB season shows the kind of potential that the 29-year-old starter possesses.
In that season, Alcantara made 32 starts and went 14-9 with a 2.28 ERA, a 0.98 WHIP, a 4.1 K/BB ratio, and 228.2 innings pitched.
Bringing Alcantara in would not come cheap for the Mets. They would have to pay up in order to get him. If he is officially made available for Miami, paying that price would be worth the risk that comes with it.
Only time will tell if New York makes a big move to improve its rotation. There are plenty of options outside of Alcantara as well, but the Marlins’ starter would be one name worth keeping a close eye on for the Mets.
