The 2025 MLB trade deadline is coming up quickly on July 31 and the New York Yankees are widely expected to be an active buyer in the coming days.
After making a run to the World Series last season and coming up short against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the expectation was that this season would be successful as well. Losing Juan Soto in the offseason hurt, but the Yankees are still one of the most talented teams in baseball.
Currently, the team holds a 50-41 record. That is not nearly where they would have liked to be at this stage in the season.
With that in mind, there are quite a few directions New York could go at the deadline. Adding another third baseman is one of those potential directions.
New York Yankees Connected to Intriguing Trade for 136 Home Run Infielder
David Hill of Yardbarker has come up with one possible target for the Yankees. He believes that New York is one of the top trade destinations for Colorado Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon.
“In theory, the Yankees do not need a third baseman. Infielder Jazz Chisholm has performed well at the hot corner and could theoretically stay at third. However, he is a Gold Glove-caliber second baseman, another area where the Yankees need help. As the Yankees finally cut infielder DJ LeMahieu loose, adding a third baseman may be more of a priority,” Hill wrote.
He continued on, looking closer at the option of pursuing a trade for a third baseman before the deadline.
“According to Jack Curry of YES Network, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman listed third base as a need. McMahon would provide more pop in the lineup while drastically improving their infield defense. While he may not be the superstar Yankees fans would hope for, he could be the perfect fit.”
McMahon has been inconsistent throughout his MLB career, but he has been solid. So far this season, the numbers don’t look great, but there is the potential that he can turn things around in a new situation.
In the 90 games he has played with the Rockies, the 30-year-old third baseman has hit 12 home runs to go along with 26 RBI’s, while batting .208/.310/.373. Last season, he played in 153 games, racking up 20 home runs, 65 RBI’s, and a slash line of .242/.325/.397.
While his numbers do not pop off the charts, McMahon could be a solid and cheap pickup. He’s worth at least considering taking a flier on for the Yankees.
