The New York Yankees made a run to the World Series last season. Unfortunately, they came up short against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Following that run, expectations ran high about the 2025 MLB season. So far this year, the Yankees have shown flashes of being a championship contender, but the flashes have not become consistent.
At this point in the year, New York holds a 51-41 record. In the American League East division, the team is trailing the Toronto Blue Jays by 2.5 games. That is not where they wanted to be.
With that in mind, the MLB trade deadline is coming up quickly. It would not be surprising to see the Yankees get aggressive as they look to power their way back to the top of the league.
New York Yankees, Cleveland Guardians Could Become 2025 Trade Deadline Partners on Big Deal
Should New York decide to aggressively pursue upgrades ahead of the deadline, adding an elite closer might not be a bad idea. There is one name that has been connected as a possible trade target.
Jim Bowden of The Athletic suggested that the Cleveland Guardians should offer Emmanuel Clase to the Yankees in exchange for Spencer Jones. That would be a massive trade for both squads, but it could make some sense.

Clase had a slow start to the 2025 season. However, he has figured things out and has been pitching at a very high level in recent weeks.
He has made 41 appearances so far this season, compiling a 4-2 record to go along with a 3.12 ERA, a 1.29 WHIP, a 4.0 K/BB ratio, 19 saves, one hold, and four blown saves. Adding that kind of weapon in the bullpen would be a big step in the right direction for New York.
As for the Guardians, bringing in a talented bat like Jones would make a ton of sense. He is just 24 years old and has been having a great season in the minor leagues. In 59 minor league games this season, Jones has hit 21 home runs to go along with 41 RBI’s and a slash line of .294/.405/.640.
While this is just a suggestion for the two teams, it’s one that would make a lot of sense. Keep an eye on Clase as a possible target for the Yankees as the deadline draws closer.
