The Arizona Diamondbacks quest to win the National League pennant for a second consecutive season will begin without their top reliever as closer Paul Sewald will be sidelined with a grade two oblique strain.
Paul Sewald has a grade two oblique strain.
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo has been the bearer of bad news recently. Earlier this spring it was announced that pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez was being sidelined with a lat strain. He now has relayed that closer Paul Sewald will also begin the 2024 season on the injured list due to grade two oblique strain.
How long will the Arizona Diamondbacks be without Paul Sewald?
No official timetable has been provided as to how long Sewald will be out, but this will cost him several weeks. Historically players return back from an injury of this severity at the minimum of six weeks. Oftentimes it takes longer.
Who will fill in at closer for the Arizona Diamondbacks?
Going forward it may be all hands on deck in regards to getting the final outs of the ninth inning. Players like Kevin Ginkel, Scott McGough, Miguel Castro, and Ryan Thompson figure to get save opportunities, but none of them have significant MLB experience in that role.
