The New York Yankees and Houston Astros played a thrilling 2024 Opening Day game. Houston got out to a 4-0 start, but ended up losing by a score of 5-4. In the ninth inning Juan Soto had some defensive heroics that preserved the come from behind win.
Nestor Cortes gave up four runs to the Houston Astros in the first two innings

A tough first couple of innings from Nestor Cortes saw the Yankees go down 4-0 rather quickly. With two outs and two runners on he walked the bases loaded and then gave up a two RBI hit to Chas McCormick and a run scoring single to Yainer Diaz. An inning later he gave up a solo home run to Jake Meyers. After this he settled in and covered five innings, gave up five hits, two walks, and had five punch outs.
Between the 5th and 7th innings the New York Yankees rallied to score five runs.

A three run fifth innings helped get the Yankees back into this game and also chased Framber Valdez from the game. In the sixth Oswaldo Cabrera tied the game with a solo home run, and then in the seventh Alex Verdugo had a SAC fly RBI to give New York the lead.
Juan Soto threw out the game tying run at home plate in the ninth inning

In the ninth inning the Astros started to rally. With runners on first and second and one out Kyle Tucker hit a potential game tying single to right field. Juan Soto fielded it cleanly, delievered a strike to home plate, and the runner was called out. A batter later Alex Bregman grounded out and the Yankees emerged as winners.
The Yankees and Astros will resume action on Friday, March 29 with the first pitch scheduled for 7:10 PM ET. That game will be aired on Apple TV.
